Medical Termination of Pregnancy, also famously known to be the Abortion pill MTP Kit seems to be more convenient than the surgical invasive methods of abortion. It is an abortion pill kit that consists of combined drug therapy. The drugs such as Mifepristone and Misoprostol are the two drugs included in the abortion kit. The combined action causes a medical process of abortion in the body by taking these drugs orally. However, Misoprostol can be inserted vaginally as well. Their effect is proven to be about 95-97% if consumed in the early stages of pregnancy that is around the first 9 weeks of gestation. One tablet of Mifepristone (200mg) and four tablets of Misoprostol each consisting of 200mcg (800mcg) are included in one MTP kit.
Mifepristone reduces the production of progesterone levels drastically which is produced by the cells present in the ovary and therefore, results in detachment of the trophoblast from the uterine wall. It is also a drug used to treat uterine fibroids and in low doses is used as an emergency contraceptive drug. Misoprostol has an action similar to prostaglandins and acts as an analog and helps expulse the tissue as it has a greater effect of strong myometrial contractions. It is a medication used to start labor and treat postpartum bleeding as well. The combined effect of both mifepristone and misoprostol, therefore, causes abortion.
Abortion pills should be taken under the supervision and guidance of the doctor. Mifepristone should be taken first; orally after food consuming an adequate amount of water. Within the first 30 minutes of consumption of the drug, some patients may feel some amount of distress followed by vomiting. In such cases, you can take another pill after informing the doctor about the incidence. There will be some spotting or bleeding within 2 days from the time of consumption. After about 36-48 hours, the Misoprostol tablets should be taken that can be inserted vaginally by oneself or by a healthcare professional taking utmost care that it is inserted correctly. This medication causes severe lower abdominal cramps and pain followed by bleeding. This means the abortion has been implemented by the action of these drugs.
Some drugs should not be taken along with the abortion pills as they may retard the mode of action or worse may cause harmful drug reactions. Medications that are prone to interact with abortion pills are:
• Long-term use of corticosteroid (prednisone)
• Azole antifungals like itraconazole/ketoconazole
• Macrolides antibiotics for example erythromycin and dexamethasone
• Anti-epileptic drugs like phenytoin and phenobarbitone
Patients having a history of liver failure, kidney failure, anemic conditions, and blood disorders are not liable to consume this drug as it has some serious effects on the pre-existing disease and may lead to organ failure. A history of drug allergy is a major contraindication. If an intrauterine device is present it should be removed before this medication is taken to avoid failure of the drug.
